Audi A8L Launch

The main circular room for the grand reveal features a gigantic curved LED display and an even larger projection mapping system that covers the entire floor with 30 projectors. A plethora of lighting and automation overhead is also integrated throughout the performances to create spatial impact and volumetric structures that respond to movement.

The brand new Audi A8L vehicles are all operated by professional drivers, but driving on a surface that is visually shifting and morphing can be quite the challenge. To accommodate some flexibility in the exact choreography and timing, we integrated performer tracking technology from Blacktrax with a realtime graphics engine from Notch. This combination allowed us to work with the multiple teams involved, and create an element of interactivity and magic in the big reveal. We created particle effects and HUD graphics to not only flow with the overall show, but also automatically follow car movement and track their positions while driving around the space.

Audi created a sophisticated event and show to introduce their new A8L to the Chinese market. No expense was spared in the planning and production catered to the impressive attendance list of famous movie stars, musicians, business leaders, and media personalities traveling to Sanya in the Hainan islands. An entire venue was built from the ground up in a park neighboring the oceanside, hosting showings every 2-3 days for nearly half a month. With multiple rooms of entertainment, lounges, and immersive walkways, this launch event felt like an amusement park from the future.
